Ichiro and the Wave

One of the many survivors that we met is Mr. Ichiro, and we present his story in a short film that we released on the 13th anniversary of the disaster in memory of those who perished. Ichiro was fishing near the coast of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck his boat. Stranded on an island during the devastation he wondered if he would ever see his family again.

Ichiro and the Wave presents a unique and inspirational experience by a tsunami survivor. Not too many people have survived being so close to a tsunami. Ichiro’s outlook remains remarkably positive in spite of having lost dozens of his extended family members. His matter of fact descriptions make it easy to understand the step-by-step disaster scenario, and it was an editing challenge to bring an unusual experience into a compact 10-minute format that is easy to understand.
